Exploring Scottish Folk Practices and Traditions

It’s been a long time since I have had exciting event update news, but together wth some friends, we have planned an autumn folklore workshop filled afternoon and concert to follow! It’s taking place in Edinburgh at and surrounding Greyfriars Kirk on the 12th October. The workshop is from 3 pm, and the concert doors open at 6.
The afternoon starts with a folklore workshop called Latenrs for the Gloaming. where I will be joined by friends Anna Corbett, Maya McNeil and Fiona Soe Paing for a workshop all about the folklore found at the edge of autumn:

Crafting
Lanterns
Lights and lanterns are a feature of Scottish folk traditions in Autumn and around Samhuinn, and we will work together to make our own for the procession to the concert.
As the days grow shorter and the air carries the scent of firesmoke, join us for an afternoon where story, song, and craft meet the deep-rooted folk traditions of Scotland’s autumn.
We’ll gather first around folk belief and folklore, led by me, exploring the ways Scottish communities marked the turning of the seasons from charms for protection to whispers of spirits wandering the liminal spaces.
Then, guided by Anna Corbett, we’ll shape our own willow and paper lanterns inspired by what we have heard.
As we craft our lanterns in this folklore workshop, we’ll learn a special seasonal folk song together, taught by Maya McNeiland Fiona Soe Paing, that will then carry us into the dusk in procession, to the concert at Greyfriars at 6pm, Three Steps Hame: Into the Gloaming Grey, our voices and lights rising as one in honour of the gloaming.
This is an invitation to step into the story, to make something with your hands, and to walk out into twilight with a flame of your own and join us later for an evening concert with your lanterns in hand.
A ticket for this workshop entitles you to a free space at the concert at Greyfriars included in the ticket price.
You can find out more about it here or use the form below to register for a ticket.
Following this workshop ( and included in the workshop ticket price) is a concert at Grey Friars Kirk in the heart of Edinburgh. called Three Steps Hame: Into the Gloaming Grey and will be performed by Maya McNeil, Fiona Soe Paing and my good friend Eileen Budd.

Music, Story & Seasonal folk traditions at the Edge of Autumn
Join us for an evening of music and story, honoring the turning of the year, the gentle drift from harvest’s abundance into winter’s first breath, and the folk traditions that lead you home.
In the gloaming grey, as dusk settles and the light thins, we gather within the sacred heart of Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh. This is the threshold hour, a tender space between day and night, where time is slower and old stones seem to listen.
Featuring original alt-folk songs, traditional ballads, and live storytelling, this immersive performance invites you to reflect, remember, and re-root yourself in the deep rhythms of our traditions. Inspired by the harvest’s close and the winter hearth, the evening conjures a world where endings cradle beginnings, song becomes spell, and stories light the way, reminding us we are never more than three steps from the otherworld.
